UPDATE: Cofounder Fiesta 2021 event date has been delayed and will not occur May 27. Stay tuned for more information.
On May 27, 2021, Cofounder Fiesta will bring together top startups with great cofounders to help accelerate high-growth companies. Hosted by Activate New Mexico with support from Global Accelerator Network and accelerator peers like gBeta, Arrowhead Innovation Fund, 757 Accelerate, and Lighthouse Labs. Our goal is to help build strong teams that go on to realize amazing growth through relationships forged in this event.
We’ll first choose the top startups from across Global Accelerator Network companies around the U.S who are looking for cofounders. Then, we’ll pursue cofounders seeking startup opportunities and choose the ones with highest likelihood of being a good fit. Finally, we’ll send both groups advance materials to familiarize and prepare for productive conversations before the big day on May 27.
- April 12 – Applications Open for Startups and Cofounders
- May 10 – Cofounders announced, pairings and prep begins
- May 27 – Cofounder Fiesta – 10am – 12pm Mountain Daylight Time (MDT)!
Event Day is a 2-hour online event consisting of facilitated networking pairing each top startup with a curated list of 3-5 potential cofounders using mainstage and round-robin breakout rooms. It’ll be fun, well-run, and value-adding for everyone involved!
Who Should Apply?
Top startups from anywhere in North America that seek a business or technical cofounder. Your startup has made significant progress (whether funded or unfunded), has earned some traction with customers (or is super close!), and is poised to scale with the right cofounder in place!
Great cofounders ready to join an early-stage startup, whether the need is business or technology. You’ve done a startup before or have all the skills and tenacity necessary to contribute meaningfully as a cofounder if you can connect to the right opportunity.
What’s the Cost?
Thanks to generous support from the City of Albuquerque, Cofounder Fiesta is free for participating startups and cofounders. We want you to know that Albuquerque is an awesome place to start a company, and Cofounder Fiesta is here to help you do it.
Why Cofounder Fiesta?
We believe it’s the right time to bring top startups together with great cofounders to build strong, high-growth startups. With the pandemic’s effects now extending more than a year and preventing traditional face-to-face events, we want to do our part to help startups get all the chances they need to make the right connection for their team. There a lot of cofounder profile and matchmaking tools, but sometimes a curated event like this can be the spark needed.
Secondarily, we also want to showcase Albuquerque and New Mexico as a great place to consider building a startup.
Will agreements be signed during the event?
Nope, this is not a reality show. We know that cofounder relationships are just that: relationships, and those take time to develop and mature. What we do know is that helping make the first connection can make all the difference. And, we’ll provide some tools and guidance as you prepare for the day so you go in equipped with knowledge of how to pursue the right relationship. Finally, we’ll follow up 2 weeks and 2 months after the event to see where connections have landed.
Can you help me with the legal aspects of bringing on a cofounder?
There are a lot of resources out there for you, but it’s nice to have a framework. That’s why we’re putting on a paid workshop April 28 in partnership with Blackgarden Law: Legal Issues & Cofounders. Participants will leave with a “term sheet” they can use to think through the possibilities and make working with their lawyer more efficient.
Is this a New Mexico-specific thing?
Nope, we’re just the ones who dreamed up and decided to push it forward, and we believe that this event has the best impact for all startups the wider we go for participation. Sure, we hope it benefits startups in Albuquerque and New Mexico, but we know that benefit is maximized when our startups are exposed to cofounders from around the country.
Plus, we think New Mexico’s pretty special :).
